1 Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. 2 Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain: 3 Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters: who maketh the clouds his chariot: who walketh upon the wings of the wind: 4 Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire: 5 Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever. 6 Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains. 7 At thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away. 8 They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them. 9 Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth. 10 He sendeth the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills. 11 They give drink to every beast of the field: the wild asses quench their thirst. 12 By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing among the branches. 13 He watereth the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works. 14 He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; 15 And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man’s heart. 16 The trees of the Lord are full of sap; the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted; 17 Where the birds make their nests: as for the stork, the fir trees are her house. 18 The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies. 19 He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down. 20 Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth. 21 The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God. 22 The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens. 23 Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening. 24 O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches. 25 So is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts. 26 There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein. 27 These wait all upon thee; that thou mayest give them their meat in due season. 28 That thou givest them they gather: thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good. 29 Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die, and return to their dust. 30 Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth.
Our God is amazing! Not only did He create the universe in six days, He created all of it to bless us! Is it any wonder that the Psalmist opens this song, once again, with Bless the Lord? David’s praises are not simply generalities but he specifically praises God for each wonder that he beholds! God doesn’t need our praise because everything belongs to Him.
~Psalms 50:10 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.
However, praising the Lord is for our benefit, don’t you understand? We need to praise Him because in praise comes healing. Are you down today? The Christmas season is suppose to be a joyous one – however, it has the highest suicide rates! Why? The same God who is praised for countless blessings came to earth to take on flesh so He could die for our sins! This same God arose from the dead and is in Heaven awaiting to take us to Him! Without His birth, but more importantly without His resurrection, we cannot claim the gift of salvation! If you have His Spirit living within you, you have absolutely no reason for being discouraged or depressed.
Some people are more apt to see life through “negative” glasses. Others have a positive attitude and nothing gets them down. The pessimistic believer has to work harder at encouraging his spirit. We are quick to take medicine for whatever ails us. Why are we not so quick to go to God’s Word when the Great Physician can heal our broken spirit? It’s sheer laziness, both of body and of mind, when we neglect so great a remedy!
~2 Corinthians 1:3-6 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; 4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. 5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. 6 And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.
Haven’t you had a friend who knew exactly what to say at just the right time in your life? The words spoken were as though they were sent directly from God! That friend knew what to say because that friend had been through a similar trial and shared what God had done! In the blessed pages of our Bible, the Holy Spirit awaits to comfort us and heal us. Our problems may not go away but our heart is made right and encouraged!
David teaches us to speak back to God all the things we wish to glorify Him! Look around you, Christian! The smell of the crisp clean air ~ the warmth of the sun on your face despite the bitter cold temperatures ~ the coo of a precious baby ~ the beautiful night skies; there are so many things for which we can praise God! It is a self-centered heart that cannot find something to praise Him for.
Look to Jesus and rejoice for all He’s done for you.
Speak of His countless blessings and let joy come shining through!
Do you need help to get started? Take a walk through the woods, or on the beach, and experience nature. It won’t be long before the smell of pine trees or ocean, a glimpse of the sun’s rays through the trees, or the distant sound of a woodpecker, take over your senses and you begin to realize that the Creator did all this for us! Now you can join David and rejoice for each blessing the Lord has bestowed upon us!
Bless the Lord, oh my soul, and all that is within me bless His Holy Name!
