Names of Jesus – Day 9 – Bread of Life
The Bible says that man cannot live by bread alone! We must have a balance to our lives. Not only do we need bread (food) to keep our earthly body alive but we need spiritual bread (the Word of God) to keep our spiritual bodies alive.
I have been challenged by catholics to prove that God considers His Word, the Holy Bible, to be the final authority for man. Catholics believe that their magisterium and traditions are equal to the Word of God and that they “enhance” God’s Word and make it profitable for the catholic to live by. However, the Word is quite clear that it alone is what man should live by!
And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live. ~Deuteronomy 8:3
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. ~Matthew 4:4
And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. ~Luke 4:4
I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. ~John 6:51
The Word of God, the Bible, is our nourishment. Notice that in three of these four verses, we are to live by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God! God does not say the we are to live by His word AND anything else. He is not saying that we are to live by only some of his words. It is that important that God would emphasize over and over that we are to live by every one of His words. Why?
The Word is our lifeline to eternal life in Heaven. Of course, Jesus was not referring to the actual eating of His flesh and drinking of His blood. He is referring to actually being born again and receiving the ability to absorb the Bible – in essence, spiritually nourishing ourselves daily in the Word of God. The unbeliever cannot discern what the Bible is saying. That is why the Bible is “dry reading” to the unbeliever.
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. ~1 Corinthians 2:14
However, to the born-again believer, the Word is life – the Word makes us alive and keeps us alive spiritually!
And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. ~John 6:35
I am that bread of life. ~John 6:48
My friend, Jesus is not only the Bread of Life but He is the Word.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. ~ John 1:1-2
When we nourish ourselves daily in the Word of God, we are taught by His Holy Spirit and are convicted of sin. Praise the Lord for the Bread of Life! Without this Bread, we are lost and going to hell. But the born-again Christian eats of this spiritual bread and is nourished! We shall never hunger because we are made alive by the Word, the Bread of Life, the Lord Jesus Christ!
